NEW WAYS WITH THE BUFFET AT SM CITY NORTH EDSA!
It is said Sweden and France were the first countries to formalize the buffet concept. The Swedish smorgasbord originated as a way to feed hungry out of town visitors who’d pop in unexpectedly. Starting out with just bread and butter, the smorgasbord display grew to include other courses like salted fish, eggs, and boiled vegetables, then moving on to cold cuts, warm entrees and salads and ending with dessert and coffee.
The French offered a more refined model, filling their lavish buffets with as a sign of prominence and as a way of entertaining rather than cooking. In 1939, the Swedes, brought the smorgasbord to America at the 1939 World’s Fair in New York, and this would inspire buffet type restaurants in the 1950s.
The man credited with creating the first all-you-can-eat buffet, however, as Herb McDonald who worked as a publicist in one of the first hotels on the strip, the El Rancho Las Vegas. The story goes that one night in the mid-40s, spread out cold cuts, cheese, and bread along the bar for hungry customers. This eventually evolved into the 24 hour all you can eat buffet for just $1.
Since that time, Herb McDonald’s creation together with the smorgasbord trend spawned a buffet bonanza across the US and eventually the world. It was not long before it reached the Philippines, where it was enjoyed by foodies for many years.
There is something magical, after all, about walking up a row of hot and cold items, a carving station for meats, a bakery station, a salad station, and a dessert station.
The good news is that, after a brief hiatus during the pandemic, buffets are back at SM City North Edsa at Vikings Luxury Buffet, Cabalen, Tong Yang Plus and Yakimix.
